Mark Zuckerberg Had a Vision and a Mission

While at Harvard, as an undergradute, Mr. Zuckerberg started Facebook and before the end of the semester, had signed up half of Harvard’s undergraduates.

Facebook’s Mission Statement has undergone an evolution over the years, but has never lost its vision.  The New York Observer walks you through the evolution.  Click here.

And today:

“Giving people the power to share, in order to make the world more open and connected.”

Congratulations Mark Zuckerberg!  You have allowed us to communicate with the world in a personal and sharing manner.

Your vision was our vision.  You had a better business plan.  Thank you.

Your Business Plan is Also Your Life Plan

Are you happy with where you are right now in this economy?

Are you hoping things will get back to normal?

Do you know what “normal” is?

It’s your comfort zone.

Each of us wants a place where stress is minimized…where we go to work…everything goes well…we get a check…and the cycle begins again.

Nirvana.

The reality is that you must create your own “normal”.  External factors will have an effect on it, but you need to “own” it.  Sit down today and make a list of your 1)  wants; 2)  needs; 3)  vision.  Yes, your vision.  Your dream.  Then tell the world why it’s important (you don’t have to publish this one) and tell them how your vision will make a statement and maybe, change the world.

If your business plan is to work at the USPS, make a plan and go for it!

If your business plan is to invent a game for the XBox, make a plan and go for it!

Create your “normal”.

Your Business Plan is Your Vision, Your Mission, Your Goal!

Remember all those great ideas that never got off the ground?

Ever wonder why?

Were you waiting for the Tooth Fairy to grant your wish?  Most of us were.  We waited for the heavens to open and for some sort of divine inspiration to tell us how to turn the “idea” into the next hula hoop craze.  No Fairy Godmothers to help either.

Your idea is your vision.  It’s the “what”.  It’s taking the “idea” or the “what” to the next level that is the committment part.

Your mission is “how” you plan to implement it.  It’s explaining to the universe just what you want to do with the “what”.  It defines the purpose and the reason for the “what”.  It tells people what your “idea” is all about and how you see it as an “idea” that someone would want to grasp, buy, invest in, embrace…

Examples:

Google’s mission:  “ to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

Microsoft’s mission:  “our mission and values are to help people and businesses throughout the world realize their full potential.”

Facebook’s mission:  “Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.”

Wal-mart’s mission:  “Wal-Mart’s mission is to help people save money so they can live better.”

We could go on all day looking at mission statements, but I think this gives you an idea of how to condense your “idea” into a plan.

Enough to think about for now.  More later…
